More Art Tour Opportunities

Having received the former suspicious request for a commission I am now somewhat more sceptical of another opportunity that has come my way (or not) today. I received an email from an online art gallery offering me the opportunity to be one of 12 artists to have my work blown up and put on a billboard outside Tate Modern in London. It will of course cost me money. £114 to be exact. £25 to register with them and £89 for the privilege of my work being on the bill board. Do I say yes or do I say no. Could be a genuine opportunity ...or it could be someone trying to fleece me!

Art Tour Opportunities

One of the downsides of The Art Tour - and there aren't many, this one is most unusual - is that one's contact details are available to allow those interested in buying something, arranging a workshop or indeed commissions to get hold of one. However, it also leaves one open to silly buggers or weirdos.

I got a call the other day from someone claiming to be interested in a commission. However, as I talked to this person my suspicions were raised. He asked for a self portrait (which I don't do) but as the conversation evolved it was clear this person was either taking the mickey or he had some strange ideas. Anyway, naively I invited him to discuss it at the studio mainly because I thought if he's serious he'll turn up and if he's taking the mick he probably won't. I was convinced he was a mickey taker when he said he would be arriving on horseback from his job as a florist to discuss a picture of himself as a mallard duck flying over the countryside ... you get my drift!!

I am not alone it would seem as later that day I had an email from the NETWORK co-ordinator about a guy having phoned several artists about a commission, no details given but sounded a littel more worrying given that I had invited this person, who I cannot contact as he withheld his number to come to my studio. I am now hoping he's no weirdo and just someone having a laugh at our expense.

First weekend of Art Tour

Saturday saw the start of the summer Art Tour. We're open on Saturdays for the first time. Traditionally the studios opened on Sundays only. In the past, the bulk of our visitors have been mostly people from the region but with a growing tourist element.

However, last year's visitor survey revealed an interest amongst the public for Saturday opening even though previous artists' experience has been that local people use Saturdays to do their chores and confine their trips out to Sundays.

Not being sure what to expect, we had a steady stream of visitors all day Saturday - mostly people coming to look see rather than buy. On Sunday, Rebecca reported a further steady stream of visitors but she felt numbers were down on last year. However, the weather can be a big factor. On Saturday the weather was good and I'm sure people decided, 'Hang the chores, I'm going to make the most of the good weather!' On Sunday the weather continued hot and sunny so I think many headed off to the coast.

The Art Tour isn't just about sales. It is as much about promoting ourselves to the public and a chance to get feedback direct from the public and also to educate - many have no idea what an original print actually is. We have been approached by two galleries, one in West Yorkshire and one in East Yorkshire to show our work. The former wants us in their summer exhibition in July and the latter when they open later on in the year.
