OK I need some advice - can anyone help?

I had what might or might not be an interesting email this evening.

A gallery in New York contacted me expressing interest in the possibility of representing me! Should I get excited? They charge an annual fee AND they take 30% commission on sales. I have no idea how to proceed.

Any artists out there in the States with some advice? How should I go about checking this out? What questions should I be asking? Or should I simply ignore it?

Hi Carol

Congratulations.

My advice for what it's worth.. Read the small print, read it again then and get someone else to read it too, then go on your instincts... If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

This lady might be able to help, she sounds amazing and very knowledgeable.

http://www.marja-leena-rathje there is a link on my blog if that helps.

Good luck, I hope that it is all good, you deserve to represented, your work is amazing. ~ Julie

Many of the galleries that use this approach Carol are what are called Vanity Galleries. They will basically show anyone's work as long as they pay and they charge a lot. I'm not sure if this is one of those but I would be very wary. Reputable galleries don't usually want you to pay as they take 50% or more in commission. I live in Canada but hopefully you will some replies from NY'ers who will be able to advise you.

Hi Carol,
Joanne Mattera has an interesting post on her Marketing Mondays slot - have you read it? She calls them Vanity Galleries if they ask you to pay to exhibit as well as paying a commission.
You can read it here:

Hope it works out....
